Introduction to Soil Mechanics Laboratory Testing

Introduction to Soil Mechanics Laboratory Testing

Author: Dante Fratta, Jennifer Aguettant, Lynne Roussel-Smith | Size: 33.44 MB | Format: PDF | Publisher: CRC Press | Year: 2007 | pages: 246 | ISBN: 1420045628

A step-by-step text on the basic tests performed in soil mechanics, Introduction to Soil Mechanics Laboratory Testing provides procedural aids and elucidates industry standards. It also covers how to properly present data and document results. Containing numerical examples and figures, the information presented is based on American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards, and US Army Corps of Engineers engineering manuals.
The authors discuss the different methods of in situ field methods and ex situ laboratory methods of soil description and identification. They present equations for the physical properties of soil and laboratory methods of soil classification. They also discuss tests for the interaction of soil and water, and hydraulic conductivity and consolidation. These tests produce information useful in the identification and characterization of soil samples and their engineering behaviors.
A comprehensive resource, the book describes the evaluation of physical properties of soils, including mass, weight, unit weight, and mass density of the soil mass and its component phases. These properties are then expanded to define a number of weight and volumetric relationships. The book also discusses tests used in the evaluation of the density-water content relationships in soils and in the evaluation of the quality of compaction operations. These features and more make this book an excellent guide for testing soils.
This laboratory manual originated from class notes developed for geotechnical engineering classes at Louisiana State University.
These notes were expanded upon by faculty and students in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Louisiana State University over the last 5 years.

To the engineer, the matenals making up the Earth's crust aredivided invariably into the categories of soil. Differing fromthe way an agronomist considers soil, the engineer's concernwith the same lies in the fact that it more far-ranging, goingbeyond an agricultural necessity as the natural medium forgrowth of all land plants; for engineers, the term soil extendsfrom the ground surface down to its contact with a layer ofhard rock.

Based on contributions to the first General Assembly of the International Consortium on Landslides, this reference and status report emphasizes the mechanisms of different types of landslides, landslide risk analysis, and sustainable disaster management. It comprises the achievements of the ICL over the past three years, since the Kyoto assembly. It consists of three parts: research results of the International Programme on Landslides (IPL); contributions on landslide risk analysis; and articles on sustainable disaster management. In addition, the history of the ICL activities (under the support of UNESCO, WMO, FAO, UN/ISDR, and UNU) is recounted to create a comprehensive overview of international activity on landslides. The contributions reflect a wide range of topics and concerns, randing from field studies, identification of objects of cultural heritage at landslide risk, as well as landslide countermeasures.

Size: 124 MB | Format: PDF | Publisher: The Japanese Geotechnical Society | Year: 2008
Soils and Foundations is a bi-monthly journal which specializes on the whole field of geotechnical engineering and related disciplines. This journal publishes research papers, reports of important engineering experiences, state-of-the-art reports on important themes, and discussions. Continuing efforts have been made by the editorial board members to maintain the high quality of the journal by reviewing manuscripts in careful and fair manner. A special attention has been focused therefore on the novelty and readers' benefit together with practical applicability if necessary. Further, the editorial board is happy to give instructions to authors of manuscripts which could improve their quality. One of the benefits to non-English-speaking authors is that the English in accepted manuscripts is improved by a specialist who is a native and professionally-educated English speaker. Good papers in this journal are entitled to apply for academic awards of the Japanese Geotechnical Society. The publication fee is free up to a specified number of pages. Soils and Foundations is abstracted and indexed in various services including Science Citation Index-Expanded; Current Contents/Engineering, Computing and Technology; International Civil Engineering Abstract; Earthquake Engineering Abstracts; CiNii and J-STAGE.
